These City Lights are about to break big. Their effortless melding of infectious melodies, distorted riffs and chaotic energy have seen them already featured in Kerrang!’s Local Heroes section. Their debut EP ‘Where We Stand’ was released last month and as such BlagSound caught up with lead singer Aaron Paxton to have a little natter.

1)How and when did the band form?

In late 2010 i was speaking to rob (drums) about his band and they said they were looking for a singer. So i went an auditioned for them, and a week of being in the band we decided to change the name to These City Lights and write all new songs and scrap their old ones. So basically started a completely different project.

2)What was the writing process like for the EP? Do you have one
standout track from on the EP?

It was very difficult, we spent ages and ages scrapping songs and trying different sounds. We had some arguments but eventually settled on 5 tracks and went and recorded them. I think we are always going to try and change things up a bit with our “sound” i dont want for us to be in a stuck genre i’d find that really boring. We all have different music tastes so it’s never going to be one stuck sound. My personal favourite is the 2nd track Breath. It’s one of the most personal ones to me, although all 5 songs are based ont he same thing, this one just felt a lot stronger. I love the pace of it and the energy.

3)I write for Blagsound.com. So what is the biggest blag you’ve ever
got away with?

As a band we try and blag stuff to get on shows but haven’t got away with any of it yet aha. I’m clearly very boring as i don’t think i have blagged anything great
4)If you could claim writing credit for any song in music history what
song would that be?

It would have to be Error Operator by Taking Back Sunday that is the best song ever written!!!

5)What would your ultimate festival lineup look like?

Wow so hard to chose

Blink 182, The Smiths, Brand New, Taking Back Sunday, Neutral Milk Hotel, The used, Box Car Racer, Hidden In Plain View, The Ghost Of A Thousand, Sum 41, way to many bands to say.

6)What do you have planned for the rest of the year, touring/recording
wise?

Well we are currently trying to try and book a tour up for june time, just everything costs so much money so just got a find a way of being able to survive whilst playing shows. Hopefully make a video for Breathe. And then maybe release a brand new song and video around september/ october
